Hurricane Harvey is unfortunately not over and I think it goes without saying that the residents of Texas and Louisiana are in need of support. Almost five years ago, I found myself in a situation I never thought I would be in, needing support after Hurricane Sandy hit my town of Long Beach, NY. I never imagined I would be standing on line waiting to receive water from the National Guard or rejoice when Home Depot showed up to give out cleaning supplies.
With what I went through during and after Sandy, I’m all about paying it forward and I cannot stop giving as much as I can to the organizations that are accepting donations. You never know when you are going to be in a situation where you need help and any amount, supplies or time that you can give is appreciated more than you will ever know.
If you can donate money, please consider helping one of these organizations:
- Red Cross
- Greater Houston Community Foundation
- Houston Food Bank
- United Way of Greater Houston
- Texas Diaper Bank
- JJ Watt’s YouCaring Fund
- Jewish Federation of North America
- UJA Federation Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund
- Catholic Charities
- LGBTQ Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund
One of the reasons I did not evacuate my home during Hurricane Sandy was because of my pets. Since most shelters do not accept animals, many people choose to stay in their homes than to be without their pets because they are your family. I could never think of how I could leave my home without my dog or cat.
